VITAMIN D

Never before has the consumption of VITAMIN D been more crucial as Covid 19 (Variant B.1.617) is spreading in the community.

Several studies worldwide have shown that the risk of contracting Covid 19 and the risk of severe progression correlate to Vit D levels in the body. At risks groups can be protected by consumption of this vitamin as trials in retirement homes shows impressive results.

Benefits

Vit D not only shows potential in regards to viral infections but is also responsible for converting into a hormone that controls 2000 genes which in turn control the immune, nervous system as well as bone metabolism and cellular cycles among the many other bodily systems.

Although Vitamin D is formed by exposing our skin to sunlight, with the current Work from Home arrangement most of us are not getting enough of the sunlight. Therefore it is crucial that we should supplement the intake.

Pls note that Vit D requires Zinc and Magnesium to be effective so pls ensure that these 2 trace minerals be included in your supplements. Do increase the intake of calcium to regulate the increased level of Vit D. As the higher level of Vit D can cause calcium to be dissolved from bones.

Dosage

Official recommendation has been far too low at 800 IU per day. This recommendation is outdated and research has shown that one should consume Vit D according to our body weight.

As a rough thumb of rule, consume DAILY

50 - 60 IU per kg for maintenance.

In the event of an infection, it is wise to increase the dosage.

That works out to be 3600 IU for a 60kg person. As most Vit D capsule comes in 5000 IU it is quite fine to consume this dosage.
