Brain Laterality

As defined by Britannica.com:

"Laterality, in biological psychology, is the development of specialized functioning in each hemisphere of the brain or in the side of the body which each controls."

Each half of our 2-part brain performs specific functions.

Functions and characteristics of the Left Brain

The left side of the brain controls the right side of the body. A left-brain dominant person tends to be methodical and analytical. The left side of the brain control these functions:

  • The ability to understand the sum of any situation that is making a judgement from a distance.

  • Controls the movement of large muscles such as walking.

  • Responsible for maintaining balance.

  • Involved in non-verbal communications.

  • Controls the sense of smell, taste, and sounds.

  • Regulates avoidance behavior.

  • Controls the immune system.

  • Responsible of involuntary body functions like digestion, the beating of the heart, and breathing.

  • Picks new experiences and alters behaviour to change.

  • Enable the ability to pay attention to details.

  • Controls fine motor skills.

  • Converts sounds to language and translates meaning.

Function and Characteristics of the Right Brain:

The right side of the brain controls the left side of the body.

In general, a right hemisphere dominant person excels in arts. He or she is visual and intuitive. It is also called the analog brain. It is responsible for the following.

  • A person’s creativity

  • One’s Imagination

  •  How Intuitive a person is

  • Responsible for holistic thinking

  • A person’s Artistic perception

  • One’s Non-verbal cues

  • Rhythm and Flow of a person

  • One’s Daydreaming

  • One’s Emotions

Therefore, the better the lateralization of both parts of the Brain, the greater the cognitive capacity we have. Even in the Animal Kingdom, superior Brain Laterality puts animals in an advantage to ensure maximum chance of survival in the wild. Often, animals are present in situations which they have to use both hemispheres in parallel to carry out different functions. Similarly, we humans need both  hemispheres in our brain to navigate our way in life. Any imbalances or under performance in functionality in both left and right could affect the way we cope with challenges as well as to reach the potential of what we can achieve. One effective way to stimulate, correct and help provide support for Brain Laterality in a gentle and effective way is through Bioresonance and Biofeedback treatments.
